Question: Has someone experienced the speed penalty for the radar pod? Is it significant?
With satellite weather, the added value of an on board radar becomes more and more marginal...I am thinking to take it off...if there is a significant speed advantage...
@Bob: any experience on that subject?

You must not live in the southeast of the United States. I consider my on-board radar the most precious electronic item on the plane. Numerous fatalities down here from people trying to pierce lines while relying on 10-minute-old Nexrad data. My onboard radar has probably saved me from life threatening situations several times.

I agree if you fly a lot of heavy ifr. We have both radar and nextrad on the beechjet. Nextrad good for the long range planning, radar for the close in work.
Post the speeds your are getting now and we should be able to compare.

honestly...I rely much more on my stormscope for situational awareness than on my radar to detect heavy weather.

Speeds: TAS is almost constant between 14.000 and 25.000. What I am gaining with the thin air, I am loosing in turbine power. I see depending of MTOW and ISA between 195 an 205 TAS

No radar pod, tip tanks, no rear gear doors, turbine enhancement, 90 gal. fuel onboard, 400lbs of payload.
I true out at 205 kts at 190.

I've got tip tanks, radar pod, no gear doors, turbine enhancement. With 400 lbs an 90 gal. on an ISA day I will see around 200 at FL 190. My expectation is to boost it to 210 without the pod...

Well, when O&N installed my new panel in 2014, they had a radar pod on stock. Around $30K on top and a speed penalty of about 5-10 kts as they told me. I haven't bought the pod because I have an ADL on board (satellite weather, delay similar to NEXTRAD). But 2 years later I had this one situation in bad weather with CB clusters around me and a 10 minutes old radar pic. It was in FL220 in full IMC and turbulance and I had about 60 kts wind from the down left. The only thing I could do was to interpolate the wind on the radar pics, to look where it is dark and to hope it was the right decision. At that moment I wanted RADAR!!!!

Do NOT deinstall it because of the few knots you get then. Without turbine enhancement my SE does 200 kts true on all levels. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Who cares?

Andreas

I have everything (boots, radar, recent engine, tip tanks). I get 203kts in the F180-210 range. I get 210kts at F120. I was told that the pod makes almost no difference.

the pod takes for sure 4-5 kts...
I am getting approx. the same speed...

I am going to install Sat-weather next week on my plane...will compare how it works...

I have both and would always want both.

If you do drop the pod, I would be interested to hear how much speed you pick up. 2 knots is what I found based on a search of the web https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=pJ7AF-Q1MjUC&pg=PA41&lpg=PA41&dq...

I wouldn't ever drop it either. Delayed Sat nextrad is not a substitute for realtime radar.
As far as a stormscope, a great instrument but only shows you what has happened. Not what is building and at what intensitiy.
Stormscopes often show strikes in clear air because of the turbulence.

But try some math maybe.
At 205kts you are covering 3.41 km/minute
You drop your radar and gain 3.41kts.
For a 1 hour trip you gain 1 minute.
For a 2 hour trip you gain 2 minutes.
For a 3 hour trip you gain 3 minutes.

Is that worth the exchange ?
I'm not sure where I would make the leap.
For Baum's TBM gain of 100kts, I would probably make the leap.
For a 15kt gain with a 5 bladed prop ? Probably not, unless it was super quiet.

I think it's to early. I'll first test my new iridium on my ipad...than compare in marginal weather radar and satellite...
but good to know...in case that I will not need it any more, I'll contact you!

Yes, please. Although I'd need it within the next 1-2 months.

Can you tell me what radar you have (manufacturer, model)?

Any news on this? Did you decide radar/not? I have an offer from Avionik Straubing meanwhile...

Hi Andreas, I am not ready...as I haven't had the chance to test it in marginal weather...

I had now the chance to compare Satellite weather with radar...and I came to the conclusion, that I will still need the weather radar...especially on short range (5-20 nm) there is no alternative...
