Yesterday I had to take off from a short 1600ft (500m) grass strip with 60ft trees at one end.

While I was light (around 3300lb) I was a little concerned as it was warm - 26C or 80F

I set second stage of flap and ran it up against the brakes but should not have been worried - it took off in around 600ft! I cleared the trees with lots to spare.

Amazing machine! Great fun. 200kt STOL plane!

Landing at the field the reverse thrust stopped it very short. I think the POH figures are conservative. Anyone else got some figures?

I agree, this is an amazing performer. I regularly operate from a 416m (tarmac) strip, on the way in the tricky bit is to see where you are going, especially if the X-wind is from the left - needs a curved approach or lots of side if you come straight in. I dump the flaps on touchdown to 'settle' more positively and rarely use the brakes - reverse thrust is wonderful. Next time you have a light aircraft try a max performance take-off, then go to and maintain Vx after you rotate - it looks and feels like hooliganism - more like a Harrier than any other aircraft I have ever flown!
I don't believe you need to set 2 stages of flap on the take off roll to get max performance - maybe a momentary 'nudge' of extra flap at or around rotate to get off the ground, no more.
The main thing though, (especially if going for max performance) is to keep the machine straight, both on take off and landing - you need to really concentrate ahead. Also, don't forget to practice the occasional go-around from a late abort - lots of boot needed and lots of trim change to cope with, more than probably any other high performance GA aircraft.

Did you burn much of the grass??!!

I have significant experience with the Silver Eagle on a grass strip -- almost every week for the past five years. That would be average warm weather short field performance. I've had similar take-off performance in the winter while plowing through 12 inches of snow. On a clean field in the winter less than 500 feet is not hard to achieve.

Regarding landing performance, after you learn to control final approach speed, using flight idle before touch done and ground idle immediately after touch down, with a little bit of reverse and braking a 500 foot land and stop distance is achievable. A 700 - 800 foot distance can readily be your average land and stop distance.

No bragging but I have landing on RWY 04 at Factoryville and made the first turn-off. It just a matter of controlling speed and taking advantage of the inflight and ground control offered by that big prop.
